Get Involved

There are so many good reasons to get involved in the student radio, and it's really easy! We all love to see new faces, and the more people who join us, the more diverse and varied our shows and work will be.

You could email one of the execs, or just turn up to the music team meetings.

The Music Team

Led by the two Heads of Music, the music team also acts like the weekly NSR general meeting. All of the cds, demos, tickets and freebies are given out at these meetings, and also a place where you can get to know other people in the radio. Unlike societies, NSR is a 'sub council', which means you don't even have to pay a joining fee, like other societies such as IndieSoc or EngSoc.

What about socials?

We generally go for a drink after every music team meeting in the Men's Bar, or a nearby pub. We organise a lot of socials on peoples birthdays, and so on! Such venues are: World Head Quarters, Stone Love, The Hancock, Bar 44, Goose, Crow's Nest- our socials aren't very formal, and they normally end up where the majority wants to go.

How do I get my own show?

You need to e-mail the head of programming with a brief outline of what it will be about, the slot length (normally one hour, but sometimes 2), the name of your show and who will be involved. You will need to sign a simple contract stating that you will abide by our terms & conditions. Nothing scary, just things like- you can't swear too much, and not before 7, no eating or smoking in the studio, you must lock up after your show, you're responsible for the equipment during that hour etc. Don't worry; you will be give training before your first show, and a more experienced member of NSR will most likely sit in for the first half hour to make sure you're doing ok.

Reviewing and Interviewing

A lot of the time gig tickets are doled out at meetings, and interviews arranged through our promotion companies, but if you have a review or interview, or pictures, that you want to be put on this website, please send them in to the Heads of Music and I will make sure they end up on this website. You'll be fully credited for anything you send in, but please be aware that reviews and interviews may be edited slightly for consistency reasons (fonts etc.), also bad grammar etc.

Otherwise, please turn up to our music meetings. If there is a band in Newcastle that you wish to interview or review, and we haven't mentioned it, email the Heads of Music and they will try to get you there.

What about News?

The Head of News position is currently unfilled; if you are interested, please get in touch and we will arrange a meeting. You'll have the opportunity to present an hour-long news show once a week, and also hold a News meeting with your News Team once a week to prepare for this. The News Team can be whoever you want- flatmates, friends, coursemates; they don't have to be from the music meeting. Remember that this will make you an Executive of the radio station, which would be a great start for anyone doing an English or Media related degree, and wishes to pursue something like this in the future.

You will generally find your own assignments and projects- opinions & dispatches on current affairs are encouraged, as well as local concerns (especially student related matters). Example: News Team took a trip to London to report on an art exhibition, which included some work by Newcastle Art students.

Technical team

If you have experience, or want to improve your technical abilities, please consider joining our technical team. You'll learn how to set up and maintain a fully functioning radio station, as well as learn to use specialised radio equipment and programs. This will include live sessions with bands, outdoor events, DJing and generally looking after the studio. If you want to be loved by everyone in the station, be one of the technicians!

Of course, you could always get involved by just listening to the shows!
